Different Streams Of The 188 Visa

Different visa streams are available based on the type of business you plan to start or invest in.

Business Innovation Stream

If you have business skills and an innovative idea, this could be the Visa for you. You must operate a new or currently existing business in Australia.

Premium Investor Stream

This visa is for individuals who are nominated by Austrade, and have invested at least AUD 15MIL in Australian and/or made philanthropic contributions. 

Entrepreneur Stream

This stream is for applicants who have a funding agreement from a legitimate third party of a minimum of AUD 200 000. They will undertake a complying entrepreneurial activity that is proposed to lead to either the commercialisation of a product or service or the development of a business in Australia.

The Subclass 188 Visa consists of five main streams tailored to different business and investment goals:

  • Business Innovation Stream: For people with business ownership experience who want to establish, develop, or manage a new or existing business in Australia.

    • Requires a minimum business turnover of AUD 750,000 and AUD 1.25 million in business and personal assets.
  • Investor Stream: For individuals willing to invest at least AUD 2.5 million in Australian investments and maintain business or investment activities.

  • Significant Investor Stream: For high-net-worth individuals who invest at least AUD 5 million in complying significant investments in Australia.

  • Premium Investor Stream: For ultra-high-net-worth individuals nominated by Austrade who invest at least AUD 15 million in premium investments.

  • Entrepreneur Stream: For individuals with an entrepreneurial idea backed by a funding agreement of at least AUD 200,000 from an approved entity to develop innovative ideas or commercial ventures.

Eligibility requirements vary by stream, but general requirements include:

  • Nomination by an Australian state or territory government or Austrade.
  • Demonstrated business success or investment experience.
  • Meeting the minimum financial thresholds for the chosen stream.
  • Aged under 55 years (age waivers may apply in some cases).
  • Scoring at least 65 points on the Business Innovation and Investment Points Test (for certain streams).
  • Meeting health and character requirements.

The Subclass 188 Visa allows you to stay in Australia for up to:

  • 5 years for most streams (Business Innovation, Investor, and Significant Investor).
  • 4 years and 3 months for the Entrepreneur Stream.

Visa holders can apply for an extension in certain streams or transition to the Subclass 888 Permanent Visa after meeting specific requirements.
