Frequently Asked Questions
The Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155 and 157) allows Australian permanent residents, former permanent residents, and former citizens to:
- Re-enter Australia after traveling overseas.
- Maintain their permanent residency status.
- Travel in and out of Australia for a specified period.
Without a valid RRV or Australian citizenship, permanent residents cannot re-enter Australia if their original visa's travel facility has expired.
You may be eligible for a Resident Return Visa if you:
- Hold or have held an Australian permanent residency visa.
- Were a former Australian citizen and lost citizenship before April 4, 2002.
- Meet the residency requirement:
- Lived in Australia as a permanent resident for at least 2 years in the last 5 years (Subclass 155).
- If you don’t meet this requirement, you must have strong ties to Australia (business, cultural, employment, or personal ties).
- Subclass 155 (Long-Term Resident Return Visa):
- Granted for up to 5 years if you meet the residency requirement.
- Granted for 1 year if you have substantial ties to Australia but don’t meet the residency requirement.
- Subclass 157 (Short-Term Resident Return Visa):
- Granted for 3 months in compassionate or compelling circumstances for those who have spent less than 2 years in Australia but need to return temporarily.
